For Teachers and Counselors

A student’s success in the Philadelphia Futures Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) Program begins with the teacher or counselor who recognizes the student’s promise and potential, and acts on it!

SAS recruits students who are motivated to achieve in high school and who share the dream of a college education. We work closely with designated neighborhood high schools in the School District of Philadelphia, and are most grateful for the support we receive from our partner teachers and counselors who routinely nominate promising and deserving students for participation in the SAS Program.

Benefits to Students

The SAS Program offers motivated high school students the skills, resources and experience needed to succeed in college – and in life. These include:

  • The support of a mentor.
  • $6,000 for college-related expenses and access to other scholarship opportunities.
  • After-school academic classes and individual tutoring.
  • Trips to college campuses and personalized college guidance.
  • Access to a computer lab.
  • A peer group of students with similar goals.
  • The opportunity to realize the dream of a college education.
   

Student Eligibility

Teachers and counselors may nominate eligible students at the end of 8th grade or the beginning of 9th grade. Spots for a limited number of exceptional sophomores and juniors may also be available. Nomination criteria include students’ academic potential, school attendance, and interest in college.

Students must also meet income criteria and be capable of working with a supportive adult as a mentor. Cooperation from parents and guardians is required for students entering the program. For more information, please refer to eligibility requirements.
