A Message to the Philadelphia Futures Community Regarding Anti-Asian Hate, Violence, and Racism
At Philadelphia Futures, we are raising our voices once again as an organization that is committed to ensuring that our students and staff, their families, and our community live in a world that is safe, welcoming, and sees the inherent gifts that each individual brings.
We are saddened and condemn the incidents, and those who perpetrate those incidents, of anti-Asian hate, violence, and racism that are happening in our nation and local communities. America has a long history of anti-Asian hate, exclusion, and racism, which are often ignored in our classrooms and by our nation’s media. We stand with the families of the eight victims of the Atlanta area shootings, and hold in our hearts the loss of Hyeon Jeong Park, Julie Park, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Delaina Ashley Yaun, and Paul Andre Michels, and the other two individuals whose names have not yet been released.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stop AAPI Hate and Asian Americans Advancing Justice have collectively reported more than 3,000 cases of anti-Asian incidents. Our students are among those who have been targeted.
As an anti-racist organization, Philadelphia Futures recognizes that systemic racism is pervasive and extends to all communities of color. It is an issue that strikes at the core of all that we do, and it is our responsibility to examine the ways in which racism and white supremacy are integrated into our work and to eradicate it.
