The Philadelphia Futures Annual Conference will be held the week of January 10th. Our Annual Conference brings the Philadelphia Futures community together to recognize our scholars and supporters, share information, learn best practices, and celebrate the start of the new year. This year, the focus of our Conference is how we, as a Philadelphia Futures community, can continue to move forward to the future through our anti-racist transformation.

Over the course of three days, we’ll have “Forward to Your Future: Transforming PF Programming” for students and alumni, “Forward to Your Future: Futures 101 Family Session” for families, and “Forward to Your Future: Transforming Philadelphia Futures Programming, Implicit Bias and Microaggressions” for our supporters. The following description outlines the supporter session, led by Jason Craige Harris, Partner at Perception Strategies LLC and Senior Advisor at Perception Institute:

How to Live Our Values: Volunteering and Mentoring to Center Belonging and Compassion

Recent research emerging from the mind sciences demonstrates that good people and progressive institutions with stated egalitarian values nevertheless often perpetuate racially inequitable outcomes. How? Implicit bias is the brain’s automatic, instant association of stereotypes or attitudes toward particular groups, often without our conscious awareness. In short, we tell ourselves stories, automatically, about every person we encounter. Such stories generally reflect the bias of society––aversion to society’s out-groups and favoritism toward society’s in-groups.

Implicit biases, if unchecked, cause good people not to live up to their values of treating everyone fairly. As a result, attempts at volunteering and mentoring across lines of difference can all too easily go awry. To disrupt these processes and therefore the inequities they give rise to, we have to take proactive, conscious steps. This workshop is a crash course in the latest research on why belonging matters for volunteers and mentors and the students they serve, how bias works and manifests, and what it takes to interrupt bias––and repair in its wake.

All of these sessions will be virtual. There will also be a live virtual stream of our Year-In-Review and Student Awards video.
