Step Up to College Celebrates 30 Years with a New Video Series
Navigating the college admissions process, without the right tools and resources in place, can often be overwhelming for students and their families. To help put students in grades 9-12 on the path to college, Philadelphia Futures distributes Step Up to College: A Guide to the College Preparation, Application, Admissions, and Financial Aid Processes. This year, Philadelphia Futures released its 30th edition!
In honor of this milestone, we launched a new Step Up to College video series, highlighting the key principles of the Guide and the elements of the college application and college-bound process, including:
- Preparing for College
- Finding the Right “Fit”
- Applying for College
- Paying for College
- Seven Steps to Conquer the FAFSA
- Writing Your College Essay
- Becoming a College Student
Back in 2014, Philadelphia Futures launched the first series of the Step Up to College videos. These three videos are approximately 30 minutes long and cover the topics of Preparing for College, Understanding College Fit, and Applying to College. The new SUTC videos, starring Philadelphia Futures collegians who have recently navigated the college-going process, are offered in shorter segments, ranging from one to four minutes, and provide the opportunity to learn each segment of the Guide in smaller increments to ensure a better understanding and an easier way to share these important tips with other students on social media.
Beginning on October 7, Philadelphia Futures began the distribution of 42,000 print copies of the Guide to public, public charter and parochial high schools, the Free Library of Philadelphia, government offices, and community-based organizations. To eliminate any barriers to access, Philadelphia Futures makes Step Up to College available at no cost. Those interested in reserving copies of the Guide for pickup should fill out this form or contact email@example.com.
“For 30 years, Philadelphia Futures’ Step Up to College Guide has helped a generation of students achieve their dream of a college education,” said Sara Woods, Executive Director, Philadelphia Futures. “Step Up to College has evolved to meet the needs of students, with a comprehensive 72-page publication, a new series of videos, a new website, and updated Facebook and Twitter pages. By publishing the Guide and the accompanying resources, Philadelphia Futures provides students with the tools and information they need to identify a school that is the right fit academically, socially, and financially and prepare themselves to be a competitive applicant and a successful college student. We are proud to make the Step Up to College Guide and its accompanying digital resources available, without cost, to Philadelphia’s students, families and community, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary.”
In addition to the print edition, Philadelphia Futures also makes available a suite of Step Up to College digital resources, including a Twitter and Facebook page and a mobile app, which launched in December 2016 and is available for free download via the App Store and Google Play.
